چکیده    Jundishapur university of medical sciences (ajums)officiated as host to the second nanodrugs congress onmarch 2012, which was held by nanotechnology researchcenter of ajums in cooperation with shahid chamran universityof ahvaz, iran. this scientific event was scheduledto be held in a bid to create an appropriate environmentfor idea exchange among the specialists and researchersactive in the field of drug delivery. the objectives of theorganization of this congress was introducing the latestachievements in the field of nanodrugs, considering targeteddrug delivery aim for the treatment of incurablediseases, improving the life quality and social health, andconverting science and technology into wealth.one of the major scopes of the congress was the applicationof nanotechnology in the field of natural pharmaceuticalproducts. recently there have been considerableresearches on developing biocompatible andbiodegradable nanocarriers/nanodevices as novel drugdelivery systems. natural polymers or biopolymers aregenerally biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic andnon-immunogenic. they occur widely in nature and areclassified into 2 groups; polysaccharides and proteins (1).chitosan, starch, dextran, and alginate are examples ofcommonly used polysaccharides while collagen, gelatin, and albumin are examples of commonly used proteins.these biopolymers are widely applied in formulation ofnanospheres, nanocapsules, and recently nanofibers inorder to enhance drug delivery to specific pharmacologicalsites or tissue engineering.lipids also are a broad group of naturally occurringmolecules that include fats, waxes, sterols, phospholipids,fat-soluble vitamins, mono-, di-, and tri-glycerideswhich are advantageous to formulation of a wide rangeof lipid-based nanocarriers; such as solid lipid nanoparticles(sln), nanostructured lipid carriers (nlc), and lipiddrug conjugates (ldc) to minimize the drawbacks associatedwith polymeric nanoparticles specially low drugloading for hydrophobic drugs (2).moreover some research are being focused on developmentof novel drug delivery systems for herbal extractsor plant actives, such as polymeric nanoparticles, nanocapsules, liposomes, phytosomes, nanoemulsions, microsphere, transferosomes, and ethosomes, to protectactive herbal ingredients from physical and chemicaldegradation, enhance safety and pharmacological activity, and overcome solubility and bioavailability
